How to tell Microsoft Edge to let you download a file it's blocking You can override SmartScreen and its protections.

I was having trouble with two files and all the rest were okay. I ran my URLs through virustotal as suggested, and one site out of 62 decided my files were malicious. On both occasions it was Dr.

I adjusted the advanced settings within Chrome; and my problem was solved. Thanks for your help; greatly appreciated. Thanks for sharing this, especially the tip about the files remaining in the downloads list so they can still be accessed.

This is easier than changing permanent settings and still gives warnings so you can load the file up in a VM if you feel it may have been a risky click. This is very risky to Disable phishing and malware protection option.

And you will face the problem after full downloading the file :. You will see that the file is a malicious and it has been blocked! And there is no option to save the file but Dismiss. You can save the file and can grab it without downloading the file again! But how? Go to Chrome Default download location and Short it by date 3.

See what you just downloaded the file by the name with extension. Rename it and change the extension. Now use the file and check with your Antivirus. Just install the 32 bit edition even though you have a 64 bit system. It will solve the problem straight away.

Seems to be a problem with the 64 bit software at least om my 64 bit computer……. How do i disable this in the latest version of Chrome The option is no longer available, and my downloaded files are being blocked.

You cannot fully disable it anymore. Google changed the name of the preference, and I have updated the article to reflect that. Third-party antivirus solutions may block downloads as well in Chrome. Have you checked whether the download was blocked by one of those programs?

Time to get rid of Chome I guess. Fack you Google Nazis for not giving us the option to exclude a download file from being blocked. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. Please click on the following link to open the newsletter signup page: Ghacks Newsletter Sign up. The Zone information is an invisible file stored along with the downloaded file in form of an alternate data stream.

Both the downloaded file and metadata is stored in the same location. Hence , when the File explorer opens the file it comes across the attached Zone information stored in the same location and checks to see if it came from outside. Running this app might put your PC at risk. As you disable the smart screen message another dialogue box shows up with the option to run or cancel. Now the user has to manually unblock the downloaded files.

This can be done with a Right click on the file and selecting the properties option on the menu. This may be puzzling at first, but the security program lists only threats there that require user decisions.

Since the downloaded file was quarantined automatically, no user action is required which in turn means that there are not any current threats. The list of quarantined threats is below.

If you are lucky, you may see the virus that Windows Defender detected when it scanned the file download. The file name is not listed there however but the date may be sufficient to make an educated guess.

A click on the row displays options to restore the file or remove it, and to display details. Details displays the file name, but it may not be enough to identify the file, as Windows Defender may display a temporary name. Remove deletes the file from the quarantine, restore on the other hand may restore it on the system so that you may access it.

The current version of Windows Defender Security Center has quite a few issues in this regard. I mentioned the lack of details already, but it is just one of the issues that you may run into. Windows Defender Security Center limits the threats to five on that page.

While you can click on "see full history" to display all items that the security program quarantined, you will notice right away that the buttons to remove or restore files are missing there. What you can try is clear the history, and retry the download. It happens that you get a failed download due to the detection of a virus, but no immediate listing under quarantined threats.

The whole process of unblocking files that you want to download that Windows Defender blocked is complicated and to a degree broken. Why are not there options to remove or restore files in the full history, why do I need to click multiple times to find out more about a threat, and why are not threats listed sometimes in the main interface where you can restore them?

Very very annoying.!
